It is estimated that more than 70% of EU legislation is implemented at regional or local level. The CoR therefore has a key role to play in:
- Defending the interests of regions and municipalities in EU legislation.
- Strengthening the regional dimension and ensure that European policies take account of territorial realities.
- Promoting economic, social and territorial cohesion.
- Fostering cooperation between European regions and cities.
The CoR must be consulted during the Community legislative process on initiatives in areas that directly affect the regions, such as the environment, education, public health, transport and cohesion policy, among others.
